You may have heard of the term ” greenwashing “, where a company will create a product that is ‘environmentally friendly’, but it really isn’t.

So if you’re going to be spending money on skincare, why not actually go Green?

First, I’ll explain what each category means:

Cruelty-free: the brand does not test on animals.

Recyclable : bamboo caps on products are more eco-friendly than plastic, and some brands use recyclable boxes too. Plus, they also can be used more than once! Here’s a short blog post from someone who washed out 900 toothpaste tubes’ worth of product from their recycling bin.

Organic: the ingredients in the product are derived from organic farming practices.

Natural: the ingredients in the product are found in nature.

Now that we know what to look for, here are some tips on how to keep your skincare routine green:

-Look for brands that are cruelty-free, recyclable, and/or organic.

-If you prefer to shop online, read reviews (like this blog post!) or ask for samples before buying the full-size product.

-When it comes to skincare products that have a long shelf life, remember that just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to use it all up quickly.

-Recycle! You can start with toothpaste tubes , lip balm tins, etc. If you want to get really serious, this very thorough blog post goes through the different ways of recycling (and what’s recyclable) and how it all works. A good tip that I’ll share is that if you go into a green or eco-friendly store, they usually have recycling bins for you to use.

-Remember, what’s good for the environment is also good for your skin! So this might mean going green with your skincare routine too.

(Extra tip: if a product has a bamboo cap/packaging, that means it is more sustainable than plastic packaging.)

-Look for brands that are cruelty-free, but also as close to natural as possible. The more natural it is, the less harsh those ingredients will be on your skin.

Now that you have a few tips and tricks up your sleeve, go forth into the world with an eco-friendly skincare routine! And if you have any more questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Summary:

We all want to do our part to save the environment, and give our skin the greatest care. You can do both by making sure your skincare routine is ‘green’.
